English Horse Saddles
Hi, i was wondering what size seat english saddle i would need if i need a size 14 for western.
Im 15, 90 pounds, 5'1", and a size 1 in womens or a size 14 in kids, if any of this helps.
Thanks!
Also, what is the best quality english saddle to get for a low price? Im looking for an all purpose saddle, and leather, i dont really like the looks of a synthetic saddle.
Thanks.
One more thing...
What size gullet is good for the average thoroughberd horse?
sorry ive added so much
Thanks again!

I would say try out some different sizes because it depends on the saddle too – but I would give a 16in a shot and see how it fits. Even a 15 and a half? Try out different saddles though
Happy Riding !!!
As for a good quality but lower priced saddle, leather Id definatley give the collegiates a shot, I loved them. Very comfy and seemed to be easy fits. But in the lower thousands try out an HDR Advantage also, nice saddle.
I have to say though, Iam quite biased on the Pessoa’s and Amerigo’s. I own a Pessoa and I LOVE it.
Go for a medium tree – but deifnatley take the time to fit it properly but I would bet on medium should do just fine.
Good Luck !!!!
Fang-Tastic – I would LOVE to know where you bought your Stuben…Ive never EVER seen a new one under $3000.00 – and Iam a Stuben fan…!!!!!

You really shoulg get your horse traced by a saddle company ( have measurements taken). Try to make sure that it fits your horse before you start making it fit you. I am only an English rider so i honestly don’t know Western sizing. For a cheaper sadle I would sugest a Wintec or Collegiate. If you want a more higher level saddle that is worth its price go with the Pessoa’s. This also depends on what type of English riding you plan on doing. (Eventing, Dressage, Eventing, or Hunter)Well hope this helps.

I ride both english and western, and I use a 18″ English saddle and an 16″ western, so I’d go with a 16″ English if I were you and see if that works.
The best way to find out what size gullet you will need is to have a saddler or your trainer come out and measure your horse.
I personally like my Stubben saddle, but they are a bit on the expensive side(about $600- $800 new), but a very good brand. A Gatsby is also pretty good, but a little less expensive.
Before you buy the saddle ask to try it out for a few days or even a week. That way you can find out if it will work for you and the horse. If it doesn’t you can always give it back and try another.
Remeber, the horses fit always should come before yours. Good luck and happy saddle hunting!

16 or 15.5

probably about a 16″, but they’re all different so i wouldn’t suggest ruling one out just because of a half-inch or so. It’s more important that it fits the horse correctly.

I’d say a 16″. That way if you get a little bigger it will still fit you. Also, below 16″ they are kid’s saddles with shorter flaps that may or may not be too short for you at 5′1″.
I’ve never seen one in person, but the Dover brand saddles in the Dover catalog look pretty nice and are cheap. They also have a “test ride” program for many of their saddles (all brands) where you can try them out for a week. Also the Collegiate (which is one of the test ride saddles, too).
I have a 24 year old Crosby Mark VII which I like a lot and has fit lots of different horses, but new Crosbys are way over $1000 now.
