7 Tips for Inspecting Saddles before You Buy

When you're looking for a quality western saddle, a used saddle can be a smart choice. The best saddles will last a lifetime with proper care. So, like luxury cars, a quality used saddle can be more aptly described as previously-owned. You can buy a lot more saddle for your money in the used category. But buying used requires close inspection of the saddle prior to buying. A used saddle is bound to have some wear and some scuffs and scrapes. That's to be expected. What you're really looking for are structural problems. The following are the top 7 used saddle inspection tips. 1. Saddle Tree.   The saddle tree is the foundation of a saddle, so if it's not solid nothing else matters. To test the tree, set the saddle on its fork, nose down. Press down hard on the cantle and twist, looking for bending which is an indication of a broken tree. A broken tree is a deal breaker. DO NOT purchase a saddle with a broken tree. 2. Leather Quality.   High quality leather will be thick, soft, and supple. It has a much longer life, especially if well cared for. Low quality leather will be thin, often cracked, and will not keep its shape. Avoid buying used saddles with low quality leather. There's no bargain there. 3. Leather Condition.   Check whether the jockeys and skirts lie flat or curl up. Curling is a sign of either poor quality leather or leather that is used-up. It's pretty much impossible to get curled leather to lie flat again. If the leather looks to be of good quality (thick, doesn't curl), but looks dried out, a good cleaning and conditioning can do wonders and bring back a lot of its luster. 4. Underside Fleece.   Expect to find a good amount of wear and dirt here, but excessive wear may require having the fleece replaced which isn't cheap. Also, uneven wear can be a sign of a badly designed saddle that doesn't fit well and should be avoided. 5. Stitching.   Check the stitching to make sure it's intact. Minor problems can be repaired, but a saddle with a lot of rotting and missing stitching should be avoided. 6. Surface.   While a quality saddle can last a long time, the care it receives will impact its lifespan and its appearance. Saddles are made to be used and passing on a quality used saddle because of some scratches and scuff marks is a mistake. But, you'll have to determine what you can live with. 7. Parts Inventory.   Do a check to see which parts might be missing. Most parts (stirrups, stirrup hobbles, billets, cinches) can be easily replaced (and many will prefer their own choices anyway), but missing parts should factor into the price. Buying a used saddle can be a very smart choice, IF you carefully inspect the saddle prior to purchase.

Pony Saddles - The Parts of the Saddle or How to Tell Your Gullet From Your Cantle

The Saddle Tree is the foundation of the saddle and will be either of 2 types - rigid or spring. A spring tree is usually used in English saddles, and a rigid tree in Western saddles. For spring trees the shape is created from a base constructed from thin plywood, layered over with fibreglass for strength. Steel strips placed beneath the saddle from front to back give the spring. A rigid tree is made from either wood wrapped with leather, or pressure molded fibreglass and wood shavings. Additional strength is provided by steel plates on the underside of the saddle. Another type of saddle is the Treeless Saddle in which the support is provided by a fibreglass pommel and cantle instead of a tree.
The Pommel is the front part of the saddle that rises to skim over the pony's withers.
The Cantle is the part that rises at the back of the seat.
The Seat is the part of the saddle where the rider sits and is found between the pommel and cantle.
The Stirrup Leathers hold the stirrups. They are usually leather straps (or they may be made from webbing) and are fastened to horizontal bars placed beneath the skirt. These bars are made in two pieces ,a bar and a movable catch to secure the stirrup leather and to release it should the rider fall from the pony.
The Stirrup Irons or stirrups hang from the stirrup leathers and support the rider's feet.
The Flap provides protection between the rider's legs and the girth buckles. It is made from leather and is found covering the girth strap.
The Girth Straps hold the buckles which fasten the girth to the saddle and are usually made from either webbing or leather.
The Knee Roll supports the rider's knee with extra padding.
The Outer Panels are part of the saddle padding and are found underneath the skirt. They are there to help spread the rider's weight over the pony's back and are made from leather with felt or wool padding.
The Keeper holds the end of the stirrup leather to stop it flapping about.
The Gullet is a groove running from front to back underneath the saddle.
The Skirt is the large leather flap on either side of the saddle.
D-Rings are useful on a saddle as they provide a means of hanging essential equipment from the saddle.

Sometimes the shape and size of your horse might change with time. In such cases adjustable synthetic saddles are very convenient. But leather saddles manufacturers very few that provide you with this option. •    They look more sleek and elegant. Synthetic saddles come in variety of colors and styles. Unlike leather saddles, these come in most bright and vibrant color imaginable. Buyers should be aware of these pros and cons of both leather and synthetic saddles before they buy any saddle. Synthetic saddles are tailored according to the needs of different people. As it happens with all inventions, saddles also developed with advancement in society. Just like saddle was invented to get rid of the difficulty and discomfort while riding horses, the material of the saddle can solve other issues of its maintenance. Type of a saddle is also status symbol for many buyers. Though synthetic saddles come in a lot of colours, leather saddles come in more flashy styles which are not available in synthetic version. While it is certainly possible to ride a horse bare back, this is not the most comfortable method for either concerned, nor does it offer as much control and stability. Man quickly discovered how useful equestrian saddles could be during early civilisation and there is evidence of horse saddle use as far back as 700 BC. Saddles were gradually developed over the ages, often in response to needs on the battlefield and as time went by the horse saddle became quite a sophisticated product. Saddle design became based on a wooden "tree," which forms the basis for the shape of the item and provides the most support for the rider. Eventually, two rather distinct designs heralded the arrival of the modern-day saddle, with the English and Western versions representing this distinction. English equestrian saddles are by far the most popular and always used in formal events or in a variety of different competitions. There are a number of different types and while they are inherently similar, each has its own distinctions, which help to make them appropriate for the particular intended use. Specifically, dressage saddles differ from jumping saddles due to the design of the seat and the relevance of the pommels and cantles. The former example, even though it is a principle variant of the English saddle, was in fact developed by a French rider. As the rider has to be a lot more mobile, jumping saddles are designed to provide less of a hindrance and much more movement in the seat area. The flaps and the front of the saddle are designed to allow the rider to help elevate the jump and participate in these difficult activities. Within dressage, conversely, the rider must be as still as he or she can and the position of the cantles and pommels is designed accordingly. This allows the rider to be very connected to the horse when in place. While horse saddles have been based on a specific design for centuries, technology has provided us with a number of different options, of specific interest to competitive equestrians. Particularly popular among jockeys, wintec saddles have a quite revolutionary design and have proven to be much more comfortable for both horse and rider. The saddles contain a design element or system that allows the saddle to actually change its shape as the horse ages, taking into account the constantly-changing performance levels of the animal as well. When selecting a saddle for a horse, correct measurements are essential and this process is, by itself, something of an art. This is definitely not a case of "one-size-fits-all" and neither the rider nor the horse will be particularly happy with an ill fitting, "make do" attempt at saddle fitting. The saddle itself is a sophisticated product and based on a combination of high-quality materials. The selection of horse saddles is an investment in your enjoyment and the safety of both the horse and the rider. If in doubt about selection or suitability, it is advisable to get the help of an expert.
