My dream is owning horses. Should I live in a apartment or live in a house that has horse property?
My dream is owning horses. Should I live in a apratment or live in a house on horse property? I read how much one horse's care would cost a year. (vet bills, farrier, hay for summer and or other seasons, cost of hay per horse, fly spray, wormers, farm fence and barn maintanence, and ect. ) But right now I'm not sure what direction I should go in. I understand how much horses cost just to buy. And I also know that someone would need to make a decent living just to take care of themelves, their car (gas and insurance), mortage, water, heating and gas bills. But how much money would I need to make of year to take care of my horse(s), me and my house bills? And what if you are living by yourself?
I am not a yard person. I love horses!!

How big of horses do Ya want?If ya want the size that will fit in an apartment then hey, that would be the right choice!
DUH!!!!!
Better go to college and make a lot of money!! Horses are more costly than any child!!

I have no idea about the expenses involved but it seems that the fast track to you owning a horse would be to stable it somewhere that you have unlimited access to. This would enable you to house yourself more modestly (apartment, etc.).

I think it would be best to live on horse property. Thats my dream too! I love horses! They are so much fun but also a-lot of work! ( Keep that in mind)
But you could live in an apartment and own a horse but keep it at a stable or something! Soo it could work either way! Good Luck!

you’d have to live in a house or a ranch because the only way to have an appartment is to keep yor horse in another persons stable. but youd have to waste alot of gas to drive to that place every day to take care of it

Where you live depends on you. Not our choice to give. That is your choice based on where you want to live. If you want your own home on some land for your horse to decrease the cost of boarding fee etc, then go for it.
If you want your horse to be boarded at a stables while you live in a different location. Then go for it.
If you choose boarding stables, it can range in cost of less than $100 a month to over $500 a month. That depends on the facility and what they offer etc.
What you need to do is first get your living condition established.
Then you figure out how much money a month you have left over to care for a horse. Once you have a steady income and have “extra” to play with incase your gas/electric bill can be high one month than the others, then you will know how much you need.
Take $50 to $100 form each check and put it in a savings. So then when the horse gets hurt or needs vet check etc, you will have money to cover it, if your horse isn’t accident prone that is. One visit can cost a few hundred..keep that in mind. Ranch calls has a fee than if just trailer into the vet.
Able to take care of own house/morgage/property tax (this is on your own btw), the bills, the horse. I would say adv of 35,000 a year. Depending on your State.

I own horses and owning horses is a lot of work. However, if you decide to own horses it is really fun and you will end up loving your horse like it was a child. The expenses aren’t that bad. Hay is like $1.50 a bale. For one horse 2 flakes a day will last a while. You can also win money or horse feed at horse shows.

well lease a horse to start with it doesnt have to go on your property and the owners can feed it and you can go halves with them for bills its the cheapest and easiest way to start
and you can see it whenever you want

follow your dreams, do you want to be miserable living in that apartment? buy the horse i would if i were you.

Why not start with a horse share – you pay some of the keep and ride it some of the time, see how you feel in deepest winter when you are trudgin across a muddy field or having to break ice on the water trough – they are great, but take a lot of dedication and work. Having a share is a non commital way to get started. If you love it, and I’m sure you will then you need to decide if you want to be responsible for it every day on your own land, or if you want to keep it at the yard and pay them to do some of the work for you.
Whatever you decide, best of luck to you. I had a similar dilema about 3 years ago, took the bull by the horns, now have a house with 20 acres of land and 8 horses with room always for another one haha. Yeah I’m tired and yeah I’m broke, but seeing MY horses when I wake up is awesome.

my advice is have some riding lessons first at a BHS approved stables and learn some more. then think again and if it really what u want get an experienced friend to go horse hunting with u.

It might be cheaper to live in an apartement and pay to board your horse somwhere. That way you won’t have (as many) surprises, and you don’t have to worry about hidden costs like electricity, land, barn and fence matinence, etc.

wither will do apartments- you can keep your horse at livery like i do with mine or at a horse property like i am hoping to get in the near future you can pop out and see your horse/s when eva u like-this howeva is so much more convinient for you.

lets just put it this way…i thought my horse was insanely expensive (12k) but the upkeep is where you really get hit. Taking care of the horse is sooooooo much more expensive than the original purchase price. If you are questioning whether or not you can afford it, try leasing a horse first. You have the option of a full lease (you pay all expenses and ride whenever) or you could do a half-lease (you pay partial expenses but only ride 3 x a weekish)….My opinion is lease before you buy and then make a decision.
