How big should my english saddle be?

English Horse Saddles
I have a 15 inch western saddle, and I was just wondering if I should get the same size of english saddle, or if the size is measured in a different way for different types of saddles. Thank you all!

You will probably want around a 16 or 16 1/2 inch seat. Western saddles typically have a smaller seat size than English saddles.
It’s best to sit in a saddle before buying it and try it on your horse, too. When you sit in the saddle you should be able to fit the palm of your hand between your butt and the edge of the saddle.

You will need a 16 inch [or 16.5] I ride in a 14 western and my close contact english saddle is a 15 inch.

Western saddles are measured from the horn to the back of the saddle (to the centre of the cantle)- english saddles are measured from one of the studs to the back of the saddle. This makes english saddles on average 2 inches bigger in measurement, so you would need a 17. This is not an exact science, but it is a good rule of thumb. Best thing is to try a few saddles and figure what works for you. I like a 17 in a dressage saddle, but a 17.5 in a GP for some reason!
Western saddles also tend to have a more varied fit for the horse in terms of tree size etc, so do make sure you have your horse measured too.

western saddles are smaller, but a 16.5 or 17 inch is fine in english
