Is food coloring safe for horses?

I am thinking of taking out an experiment for my science fair, if the horses have a preference for the different colors of hay. Anyway, I wonder whether or not human food coloring is safe for horses (which wouldnt have much to eat at all), just one bite. I would have been a food coloring in a bottle with water and spray to hay, a shade. I am planning for the security check at least 2 vets to ensure that it will be safe (depending on which I am) with food coloring. However, I have no horse, so do not know all the vets, all I could see in the yellow pages of the phone and call your vet and ask for the e-mail or a veterinarian, or bother? How can I contact a veterinarian, and if it is to a vet, and they know the answer to my question that would be too great. Thank you!
