Queenslander, Leonard Ross Dittman, known as Mick Dittman didn't take long to become one of Australia's champion jockeys with an outstanding career record. Known as 'The Enforcer' because of his use of the whip, Dittman dominated Australian race tracks in partnership with trainer, late T. J. Smith, a formidable combination that rewrote many chapters in horse racing history. Dittman began his racing career on the Gold Coast as an apprentice with Bill Kraft in the mid-1960s. As an apprentice, Dittman's first triumph was on Red Shah in the 1968 Gold Coast Newmarket. The taste of victory was too tempting for 'The Enforcer' who soon steered Makata in the very next year to the winning post in the Ipswich Cup. His final years as an apprentice with Patt Duff in Brisbane was the beginning of a glorious adventure on the tracks with his first Group 1 win on Knee High in the 1972 Doomben Cup. Dittman made sure he dominated Brisbane racing . The big southern carnivals were his lucky charm with a record six winners as well as a second place at in a special program at Eagle Farm in November 1976. Dittman's never say die attitude continued in the 1980s in Sydney in a partnership with Tommy Smith, in whose stable he became the top rider. The Smith-Dittman duo brought home three Sydney premierships which formed the basis of one of the most formidable combinations in Australian horse racing history. Winning 88 Group 1 races is no small feat for Dittman whose penchant for winning resulted in a total of 1700 victories which included the Melbourne Cup in 1982 where he collared the 'King', Kingston Town, in the shadows of the post to take Gurner's Lane home by a 1/2 head. Among the other memorable wins in the saddle are three Golden Slippers, two Cox Plates, and a Caulfield Cup. Angus Armanasco trainer of Full On Aces was the colt that brought home Dittman his very first Golden Slipper in 1981, followed by yet another victory in 1986 with the T. J Smith trained Bounding Away. Chestnut filly Bint Marscay trained by L. Freedman handed him his third Golden Slipper Stakes in the year of 1993. Strawberry Road and Red Anchor were the two horses that won him Cox Plates while he rode Sydeston home in the Caulfield Cup. Had Dittman forayed onto the race tracks overseas, it doesn't take much of an imagination to figure out what his record would have turned out to be, especially along with T. J. Smith. His love for his native Queensland made him entertain only interstate mounts during the big carnivals. A mangnificent horse racing career with more than 1700 wins can not go unnoticed. Mick Dittman, undoubtedly, was inducted into Australia's Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2002. Dittman hung up his racing boots to become a bloodstock agent in Singapore. This is not before setting up his son, Luke Dittman, to continue his rich legacy. Gamblers at Eagle Farm Racecourse have the 1000 metres Mick Dittman Plate to wager on as a tribute to Mick Dittman, 'The Enforcer'.

is it true that when you compare an australian saddle to a western you add 2 inches to the australian? (that didn't make any sense) say if i had a 16" western saddle. would an 18" australian saddle be the equivalent? thanks

While many countries are feeling the pinch, Australia is faring better than most with unemployment levels falling. And as we head into summer down under, seasonal jobs are back in demand, for skilled and unskilled workers alike. Here's everything you need to know about Summer jobs down under.
Get a working visa
The first thing to get sorted is your working visa. Australia is part of the Working Holiday Maker (WHM) visa scheme, geared towards younger travellers looking for short-term employment. The visa lets you stay for up to 12 months even if you don't plan to stay for the duration. Partnerships currently exist with 19 countries, including the US, Canada, Thailand and various European ones, for people between the ages of 18 to 30 with no children. While you can stay for the year the Visa only covers you to work for a maximum of 6 months with any one employer, making it the ideal way of combining work and travel.
Opportunities for skilled worker
If you have professional skills and qualifications behind you and are prepared to be flexible about where you live, you'll find these welcomed by a country with a relatively strong economy and a dispersed population. Several sectors in particular are officially classed by the Government as 'Migration Occupations in Demand'. These include engineering, health and medical, IT, accounting and the trades. It's a surprisingly long list including professions as diverse as Cartographer, Archivist, Radio Journalist, Dietician and even Seafarer!
Enjoy the great outdoors
But if you're coming to Australia you probably didn't come here to be cooped up indoors. If you've come for the great outdoors why not see if you can work in it too? What better way than to do this than muck in and help out with the harvest? You could try mango picking up north in Darwin or grape harvesting in Berri. The Australian government publishes a 150 page guide to harvest work online detailing which areas grow what produce when. Harvest work can also help you extend your working visa with special dispensations made for agriculture workers. But city slackers be warned, life on a farm or orchard starts early, generally around 6am to beat the afternoon heat.
Fancy something a bit more glamorous? How would the word Jackaroo or Jillaroo look on your CV? Experience life on the ranch at a sheep or cattle station, learn how to saddle and ride, shear some sheep, shoe a few horses and maybe even fell a few trees, while you get your hands dirty building fences and pens. Sites like Jackaroo Jillaro can put you through your paces and help get you in the saddle with in depth training both in the classroom and in the field. They even say they prefer taking on newbies, so there's no excuse not to try out your inner cowboy.
Finding the right job
Gone are the days when seeking casual work was all about trudging door to door hopefully, resume in hand. The Internet has made it easier than ever to find job opportunities in Australia even from abroad. Local classifieds sites such as Gumtree make it easy to sift through thousands of short-term jobs. It's also a good idea to create email alerts to have new vacancies delivered straight to your inbox.

You are doing something constructive,quite unlike slugging back half a bottle of Cabernet shiraz in one go, or scoffing down a whole packet of M and M's when you girlfriend isn't around. . . . no, guitar playing is very good for your mental health, disposition, relaxation and manual dexterity( oh. . go on, I had to sling that one in. . . NO?)
Well, anyway since I have relented to the demons in my head that whispered into my shellike ear in the middle of the dark hours, that I simply would go mad if I didn't get one, and pretty damn soon at that, I relented and the upshot of that is to all you would-be phsychologists out there. . . hey I feel pretty damn good now. . . much better than I was! Ever since that fateful night when I was introduced to the great sound of David Churchill's lovely Lap steel that he made for the Devil's advocate of these black arts, Mr. Jeff Lang. . I was hooked. I needed to get one and couldn't rest until I did. I sulked and whined, pouted and flounced around all the guitar shops always going away frustrated, empty handed and in a bad mood. . . " Three Frickin Grand?. . . how in hell's name can I find that kinda dough?" Well, the truth was I couldn't. I tossed and turned tirelessly in the dark blue hour of pre-dawn hatching my plot.
Then, in a flash of blinding inspiration, I had the answer ( which should have entered my numbskull weeks before) I would convert one of my collection! Aha. . sheer genius. But which little innocent would go under the knife in the blinding glare of my headband camping light? The Sanchez travel guitar of course. . it's fate was sealed. It had all the right qualifications, a lovely long neck, strongly built, is it ever! I had bought it intending to use it as, well, a travel guitar, but somehow my beautiful Baby Grand Taylor and I seem to never be able to be apart fo too long, but that's another story!!!!
The more I thought about it, the solution seemed more practical. . . Why did it take so long for that penny to drop ( the lights are on Buddy, but no-one's at home. . . . Der) What would I need to allow the operation to succeed? The list was made. . . A new nut and a new saddle, both out of Macarta bone a great synthetic bone substitute with good acoustic qualities, some resonator type strings . . I dashed off to get some John Pearse Nickel wound G tuning strings for resophonic and steel guitars. What next?
Er, ummm, That's it? no there must be more. . . nope. Yup, a tailpiece small enough, a mandolin one would do!
Oh, yeah, numbskull, a cool, shiny steel bar to play the dang thing with!!! Ok, I resigned myself to the fact that after the conversion was done and when I tuned up again the patients neck would bend horribly and snap like a carrot. . . . we would see!! It would be a sacrifice to the Gods of the Devil's music, I consoled myself to that event! The day came. . . a clean sheet was under the patient, the gruesome tools needed lay in a shiny pile - files, hacksaws, sandpaper, needle files and a small vice. It's strings were stripped away, a hand inserted through its only orifice, to check the internals to see if they could cope with the operation, an executive surgeon's decision made and we were away. The job was so gruesome so horrible that I had to anethesize myself with copious drafts of medicinal rum from a handy container, namely a glass.
The nut was removed, and the new one measured up and transplanted. Likewise the saddle, a deeper slot painlessly gouged out. . . what next? The next thing was to put the new tailpiece that would support the strings to the back of the guitar. A mandolin tailpiece was chosen, neat, petite and just the right size! Then almost in a flash, it was over! so quickly!
The new strings were anxiously replaced, God they looked too thick!!!! They were tuned to a low open D tuning ( DADFsharpAD )and anxious moments ensued as the guitar took up the new strains. . . . would anything snap? No, it didn't and still ahsn't three months later! It has worked really well and bit by bit, the new style of playing has been tried and tested. Luckily enough, its still small enough to play like a proper guitar and when I'm fed up with trying to play it oacross my lap( a very unnatural pose for a chap who has played normally for twenty years) I shift it up and play it like I know how with a brass little finger slide. . . . . . . . . . . . I have joined the exalted throng and I feel not like a leper!
I also recently completed the building of a proper Weissenborn from Australian Maple and the telling of that epic adventure can be found elsewhere on I will be putting a piccy of my little Sanchez which sounds fantastic and twice as loud as it used to be, on my new site
My addiction is complete. . There is no hope for me and counselling would fall on deaf ears! No wonder Johnny Depp owns about seven of them! a cool dude. . . . . good onya Johnny boy!

Damping is a phenomenon which exists in every system. Some systems have little and some have more. it is related to what elements and how they are assembled with each other in system . such phenomena dissipate energy and reduce the vibrating caused by external applied forces to system like earth quick, wind ,sea wave and thunder . Different types of dampers have been known regarding to their function: passive, active and semi-active. In the field of passive dampers we have many types: tuned mass damper TMD, tuned liquid damper TLD, friction dampers FD and viscose dampers VD.
The present research experimentally studies damping ratio of a three-storey building using TMD and without TMD damper to see how damper increase the damping ratio . To carry out this study A structure and the necessary equipment including a loading system and a data acquisition system are used. . Structure examined under the free vibration in this way: A small displacement implemented to the structure as a free vibrations. And by carrying out more than 150 tests, the damping ratios of the structure using TMD and without TMD in different loading conditions are obtained. The results show that the Tuned mass damper has a major effect on the damping characteristics of the structure The results also show that the increasing the loading applied to structure doesn’t change the damping ratio which is analyses an Ansys software .

1 Introduction

1. 1 Damping concept
Damping is a phenomenon where the amplitude of vibration in a mechanical system steadily diminishes. The effect of damping is to remove energy from the system. Energy in a vibrating system can be dissipated, being converted into heat [1,2,3].

Damping is present in all vibrating systems. Every system which possesses mass and elasticity is capable of vibration. Dampers are kind of device in order to dissipate vibration forces. . . Different types of dampers have been known . in general they are divided in three categories: passive, active and semi-active. [4,5,6,7]. Tuned liquid dampers[8] and Tuned mass dampers[9] are very usual one which are using nowadays in many structural system and the second one is our research topic.

2 Examined model

In present research A structure is being designed and built as a model of a real structure in Fig. 1

the weight of the structure is 200 kg and the stiffness of that is k=6. 666 N/mm and the natural frequency is w=0. 056 Hz which was analyses in a finite element software Ansys

3 TMD design [11~25]

in order to design the TMD with study of many books and article and the real TMD used in some real structures in the world like Citicope tower in New York [10] we came to this result : the mass of TMD can consider 2 percent of structure’s mass or less, but it should be design in a optimum way . Natural frequency of TMD Should be as the natural frequency of real structure. When the real structure approach to its natural frequency caused by external applied forces, TMD must approach to its natural frequency too. The vibration of TMD at natural frequency causes turbulence in general movement. In this way the frequency of structure go further from its natural frequency.
     As a result, the stiffness of TMD also should consider 2 percent of structure’s stiffness to      .      be as the same.

After determination of mass and stiffness’ amount of TMD, a block and spring design and then manufactured at Fig 4 and 5.

After manufacturing the block as a mass and spring as a stiffness element, they attached to each other Fig 6 and assembled on a bearing Fig. 7 in order to have soft movement .

And finally whole commission on our modeled structure to examine how it effect the damping ratio of structure Fig. 8.

4. Method of loading and equipment
To apply load to structure we use a method showed in Fig 9. a block will hang using a rope to structure and suddenly the rope will cut then dropping the block cause a loading which apply to structure . this procedure carry both condition the structure using TMD and without TMD . in this way we have the free vibration condition .

The equipment Fig . 10 to record the data is:

a) A sensor which is called transducer
b) A hardware which is called Data Logger which transfer the sensor output to computer
c) A computer and the software of Pulse which show the output in Graph as a graph of time-displacement.

4. Methodology of experiment
in order to have free vibration we should apply the initial speed or initial displacement to the structure. Our method is initial displacement . for this purpose the structure will be loaded bye some block and by make them free from the structure the initial displacement will apply to structure . the loading carried out using steel block and different size fro 15 kg until 75 kg with the step of 10 kg. The test carried out nearly 150 times to get to a correct conclusion.

5. Getting Data [26]
Using experiment equipment we come to a time-displacement graph which is being showed in Fig 11 , 12 . the first graph shows the displacement of structure under the free vibration using TMD and the second one not using TMD.

It is clear if we confess on both graphs it shows the Maximum Displacement reduce from 1. 3 mm to 1. 1 mm.
For all the graph we use the   ‘logarithmic decrement’ method to calculate damping ratio . Fig 13 shows a graphical representation of a damped free vibration. The motion shown in Fig 13 may be represented by the equation:

Where

Is the natural frequency, is the damping ratio of the system and X and are arbitrary constants determined from initial conditions.
The natural logarithm of the ratio of any two successive amplitudes, for example and in Fig 1, can be written as:

Where and can be obtained from Eqn 3 at t=t1 and t=t2=t1+τ, respectively. Inserting these values of and in Eqn 4 will result in the following equation:

For every step of loading we get the result showed in table1.

6. Results
- Damping ratios change with applying different loads for the system not using TMD instead it will not change for system using TMD . thus it can be show that using Tmd increase the damping ratio but if the amplitude of system increase cause by Appling more forces, it will not change. . A Tuned Mass Damper has constant behavior.
- For optimize performance of TMD it is better to design optimum range of 0 to 2% of mass and stiffness of real structure
. If we suppose the structure like a cantilever beam, the edge of the beam has more displacement during vibration, so it is rational to locate damper where there is more displacement.
