I just completed staining our double deck with Cabot Australian Timber Oil in the color of Jarrah Brown. I thought about creating a two tone deck (the rails one color and the floor another), but after sampling a number of different colors, I decided to use Jarrah Brown on the floor as well, I am glad I did. It is an absolutely gorgeous color. Our two decks that are connected by a walkway and are constructed of two different types of wood, cedar and pressure treated. I expected one deck to be much darker then the other because of the difference in wood and age, but that wasn’t the case. The downside to applying this stain is that you need to be careful to not overlap or you will have spots that are darker then others, if this does happen, quickly feather area with a paint brush before it begins to dry. Since it drys very fast, you do need to work fast. I would suggest applying it in the morning before the hot sun is beating down on you and the deck. The cooler the temperature the easier it will be to apply it. I spent many hours researching deck stains and cleaners, and found that everyone has a different opinion. Some thought that Australian Timber Oil was a great product, others did not, but that is true for almost all other products as well. I used one coat, if using two coats it would have to be applied before it is completely dried, wet on wet application, otherwise it won’t penetrate through the first coat. Hopefully I will be just as happy when the last of our Minnesota snow melts in the spring.
